Web 2.0 is the past – Web 3.0 is the future. This slogan signalizes what next generation internet has in store – Web 3.0, also known as the semantic web. It will provide easy access to global knowledge and will dramatically improve how we manage the information glut in the internet. This is precisely where “THESEUS”, a research program initiated by the Federal Ministry of Economy and Technology (BMWi), comes into existence. The program shall create an environment in which the development and creation of new knowledge structures can arise. An important goal is to improve knowledge utilization by applying next generation internet technologies.
A total of 6 application scenarios (use cases) are promoted. In order to establish the necessary infrastructure, a range of basic technologies (core technology cluster) are being developed in parallel. The automated semantic analysis of texts and multimedia files or the handling of ontologies, are just a few examples.
