Modern technologies and industry standards have been applied by empolis since the beginning.  Already in the mid 90s, we concentrated on Java and XML and later on J2EE and Net as technology platforms.  Industry standards, such as TopicMaps (ISO/IEC 13250), were decisively influenced by empolis.

For many years, empolis has contributed to international, public research and development projects: on the one hand, to further develop fundamental technologies, and on the other hand, to pave the way for new technologies in order to operate in specific application areas and to be used in empolis solutions.  Beyond these projects, empolis is in close contact with notable research institutes and universities worldwide and is also an associate of the DFKI (German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence).

In the context of our motto, The Information Logistics Company, empolis currently focuses on the following areas: 

• Secure exchange and processing of digital contents in peer-to-peer networks with primary focus on privacy and protection of copyrights
• Digital entertainment solutions with focus on download platforms and mobile services
• Personalized information search and processing, based on technologies in the areas of information retrieval, machine learning, case-based reasoning, information extraction and semantic web
• XML and SGML-based content management embedded into business processes by means of business process management
